Sign Language Class

One doesn't truly understand those who are in the deaf culture until you are put into their culture in which you are not fluent. Over the past year and a half I have had the privaledge to work with my friend Jason H. He is a friend that is deaf. I have learnt so much from him and his wife Lisa about signing and the deaf culture. I didn't realize that there was such a strong deaf community in Saskatoon. When I thought of taking sign language I thought it would simply be learning the signs for the words. Now I am currently attending a sign language class. (American Sign Language) taught my Lisa. It's 3 weeks into my class and I am starting to understand that there is so much to know other than just vocabulary. Their grammar is completely different and certain words have certain implication. I learned the hard way that the sign for "meet" is very close to another word that is quite "inappropriate". We laugh at our innocence. It's fun to be a beginner. Today in our class we were not allowed to use our voices to communicate. It was different communicating in total silence. Lots of laughing and confused looks from those of us that are used to communicating with our voices. Good times and wonderful people. Learning new languages is so fun.
